Your Questions About Surround Sound Receivers

Nancy asks…

PS3 Picture quality when connecting HDMI through surround sound receiver?

When I connect my PS3′s HDMI cable directly to the TV the picture quality is great. But when I go through the surround sound receiver (brand new Denon AVR-1610) it flickers constantly and is unwatchable.

I’ve tried different HDMI cables and even a different surround receiver, same thing. My XBox 360 is connected to this receiver via HDMI and it looks great.

I would think my PS3 my be bad, but it works when connected to the TV.

Any thoughts?

Ryland answers:

I have always found that it is better to go directly to the tv when connecting video via the receiver. Try witching HDMI port on your receiver (you should have more than one) say from 3 to 1 or 2 and see if the video improves. Low end receiver have a poor record in passing video to the tv, compare to higher end receivers. Pioneer Elite does a very good good along with Onkyo receivers 600 and up series receivers. Hope this will help you out.

William asks…

Can a surround sound receiver be made to work with just 2 speakers for music only?

I’ve got a surround sound receiver that I just want to hook up with a couple old cabinets for some music in the garage. Can’t seem to get good sound out of it no matter which speakers outputs I use. Can I use this like a plain old receiver?

Ryland answers:

You should hook up the speakers two the two main front speakers (L and R). You should get good sound, so if it isn’t good, I would suspect the speakers not the receiver.

Mark asks…

Can you use any receiver to hook up surround sound or does it have to be a Surround Sound receiver?

I have surround sound speakers and subwoofer. My friend seems to think I need a receiver specifically designed for Surround sound.

Ryland answers:

Simple answer: your friend is right (with a caveat covered in the last paragraph), you need a surround receiver (or surround amplifier) to get surround sound.

Why: You need separate amplifiers for each channel of sound, so stereo sound requires two, but 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1 “surround” sound requires 5, 6 or 7 (respectively) channels of amplification (The x.1 channel refers to the LFE (or subwoofer) channel and that is assumed to have it’s own amplifier built in). A stereo receiver (or amplifier … The difference being a receiver has a radio tuner included) therefore has two channels of amplification, while a surround sound (aka A/V or Home theater) receiver has 5 or more channels of amplification. They also have built in audio decoders (e.g. An AC-3, Dolby ProLogic) that take an input signal (from a CD or DVD player for example) and ‘decode’ it into the various channels of information that are then distributed to the separate amplifiers and out to each speaker. Its’s this combination of multiple amplifiers and decoders that really makes an A/V receiver what it is.

There is a type of exception to this. Computer speakers include amplifiers, so you can get surround sound from surround computer speakers if you can input the individual channels of input (usually from a computer sound card) or if the speakers have built in decoders for, for example, an optical input. One example of the latter is Logitech’s Z-5500 speaker system. If your surround speakers and sub are self powered they may allow surround sound without a surround receiver/amp.

Robert asks…

What is a good surround sound receiver for my home theater?

I am putting together a set of nice Klipsch speakers and I plan on having 5.1 or preferably 7.1 surround sound– but my ancient receiver just doesn’t make the cut. What receiver should I get? (“Audiophile” quality, please)

Ryland answers:

A couple come to mind.

NAD makes a fine receiver and separate standing amp

http://www.spearitsound.com/nad/nadspec.htm

A whole list of refurbished high end NAD amps and receivers

Emotiva is good in both cases, receiver and amp, and lastly
Emotiva XPA-5 from $709

Denon AVR 391 from $249

Amps provide a clearly better sound quality over receivers. Today’s receivers can link internet radio at no cost.

Best.

How to connect a desktop pc to a dolby digital 5.1 surround sound audio receiver?

I have an HP Pavilion Desktop PC and I want to connect it to my Sony Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound receiver. How can I do this while receiving the full 5.1 surround sound effect? Thanks in advance.

Ryland answers:

The most important piece of information is the type of sound card. Some sound cards have optical or coax connectors. Some are stereo only. Some have proprietary adapters for surround sound audio.

How do I install my HDTV to my surround sound receiver?

I have dell model W3707C HDTV and I am trying to install my JVC model RX-5030V surround sound receiver. Nothing seems to work. Does any one have any solution to my probleme.

Ryland answers:

Don’t get too complicated.
Just connect digital audio from the TV to the receiver.
If you have any other video source, connect video directly to the TV and connect audio to the receievr.

James asks…

Can I connect my full HD tv 2 surround sound receiver directly?

I want 2 run an optical audio wire from my tv to my surround sound receiver directly. Will this still give me true surround sound? I want to get rid of my dvr box (audio is going from that to SS system via optical) but want to keep getting true surround sound. Thanks!

Ryland answers:

You won’t get surround sound by connecting optical from TV to receiver, the only way is connect optical from DVR box to receiver.

Susan asks…

How does one hook up a PS3 to a surround sound receiver? The model is a Philips HTS3544.?

I only have one HDMI slot in the receiver so using two HDMI cables I think is out of the question. I think I can use an optical cable from the PS3 because there is a slot, but I’m not tp positively sure where that would go onto the back of the reciever. Again my surround sound receiver model is Philips HTS3544. Thanks.

Ryland answers:

If you want to go with just HMDI hookup and only have one slot then this will help

there are others out there but this will help you get the most out of ur hi def set up and open the door to other hmdi devices
